Is Samsung Taking Over Apple?

For years, the battle between Samsung and Apple has been one of the biggest rivalries in the technology world. Apple has dominated the premium smartphone market with the iPhone, while Samsung has built a huge global presence through its Galaxy lineup. But in 2026, a new question is becoming increasingly important: Is Samsung finally taking over Apple?

The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung held 23% of global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2026, while Apple had 21%. Samsung reclaimed the global No. 1 position after Apple had led in the previous quarter. IDC’s figures also put Samsung ahead, at 22.7% compared with Apple’s 20.2%.

This is a significant achievement for Samsung. Its broad range of smartphones, from affordable Galaxy A-series devices to high-end Galaxy S and foldable models, allows the company to compete across multiple price categories. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series has also helped strengthen its premium position.

However, saying that Samsung is “taking over Apple” would be an exaggeration.

Apple remains extremely powerful. In Q2 2026, Apple’s smartphone shipments grew strongly even though the overall global smartphone market declined. Counterpoint reported that the iPhone 17 series remained the world’s top-shipped smartphone model during the quarter.

More importantly, Apple continues to have one of the strongest technology ecosystems in the world. The combination of the iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, Mac, iPad and services makes it difficult for users to leave the Apple ecosystem. Apple’s financial performance also remains impressive: the company reported $109.4 billion in revenue for its fiscal Q3 2026, up 16% year over year.

Samsung, meanwhile, has its own major advantages. It is investing heavily in artificial intelligence, foldable smartphones, displays and semiconductor technology. Its enormous manufacturing and component capabilities give it flexibility that many competitors lack.

The current smartphone market is also changing. Global shipments fell significantly in Q2 2026 because of rising memory costs and supply pressures. Yet Samsung and Apple were among the few major manufacturers to grow, showing how strongly consumers continue to prefer premium brands.

So, is Samsung taking over Apple?

Not exactly. Samsung is currently beating Apple in global smartphone shipment volume, but Apple remains extremely strong in the premium segment, ecosystem, brand loyalty and profitability.

Instead of one company completely defeating the other, the smartphone industry appears to be entering a new phase where Samsung and Apple are becoming even stronger competitors.

The real winner may not be decided by who sells the most phones in one quarter. It could depend on who leads the next generation of technology—particularly AI, foldable devices, software ecosystems and innovative hardware.

For now, Samsung may have the momentum. But Apple is certainly not out of the race.
